Google expands submarine cable network to Dominican Republic
Google announced plans to expand its submarine cable network in the Americas, adding the Dominican Republic to four new connectivity routes linking the country with the United States, South America, the Caribbean and Europe.
The expansion includes three new systems—Alisios, Canoa and OlaLuz—as well as a new branch of the Firmina cable. The projects are part of Google Cloud’s Americas Connect initiative, which aims to increase the capacity, diversity and resilience of digital networks in the region.
New routes for the Dominican Republic
Alisios will connect the Dominican Republic with Panama and Chile, creating a new data route between the Caribbean and South America.
Canoa will establish a direct connection between the Dominican Republic and Bermuda, while OlaLuz will connect the country directly with Florida, increasing capacity between the Caribbean and the U.S. East Coast.
Google will also extend the Firmina submarine cable to the Dominican Republic. Combined with the Nuvem and Sol systems, the new infrastructure will create additional connections between Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States and Europe.
Greater connectivity and resilience
Google said the new routes will diversify international data connections and reduce reliance on individual cables, improving network resilience during outages or disruptions.
Submarine cables carry large volumes of data supporting cloud computing, artificial intelligence, e-commerce, communications, telemedicine and other digital services. Google currently operates more than 10 million kilometers of terrestrial and submarine fiber worldwide.
President Luis Abinader welcomed the Dominican Republic’s inclusion in the expansion, saying stronger connectivity could help reduce the digital divide, develop technological talent and create new opportunities in the digital economy.
The announcement was made by Brian Quigley, vice president of Global Network Infrastructure at Google Cloud. The expansion will also strengthen Panama’s role as a regional connectivity hub through its new connection with the Dominican Republic and Chile.
