Government seeks to train one million Dominicans in the use of Artificial Intelligence
Santo Domingo — The Dominican Government presented the RD Inteligente program, through which it will seek to train 1 million people to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their respective fields of work and study.
During the launch event, held at the National Palace, President Luis Abinader stated that the idea is for citizens to optimize their job skills, increase productivity, and generate new opportunities.
“We don’t want to turn a million Dominicans into programmers. We want them to be better at what they already know how to do. We want teachers to be able to teach better, doctors to have access to new tools, small business owners to be able to sell more and manage their businesses better, young people to find new job opportunities, or entrepreneurs to be able to compete from anywhere in the country,” the president argued.
Abinader highlighted that the initiative will offer training from the basic level to specializations in automation, data analysis, and programming, and will also facilitate international certifications backed by Amazon, Google, Cisco, and Microsoft.
“This project establishes a learning path that ranges from basic training to the use of artificial intelligence to increase productivity; and, for those who want to continue advancing, they can specialize in areas such as automation, data, or programming,” he explained.
He also highlighted that it will contribute to modernizing the State, strengthening MSMEs, and making the Dominican Republic a technological benchmark in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Operation
According to Jimmy Rosario, rector of the Technological Institute of the Americas ( ITLA ) , the platform will offer 28 training pathways tailored to different professions and sectors. Furthermore, it will feature a technological infrastructure designed to reach the entire country.
“When one million people learn to use it (AI), we will help transform the future of the entire country. The true value of this lies not in the algorithms themselves, but in improving the quality of life for all citizens,” Rosario stated.
For his part, the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, emphasized that artificial intelligence “is no longer a technology of the future,” but a reality that is transforming the way citizens work, learn, undertake projects, and solve problems.
Paliza affirmed that the Dominican Republic has embraced this challenge with a national vision, through the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (ENIA), aimed at boosting innovation, strengthening digital capabilities, and developing the talent demanded by the new knowledge economy. Progress has also been made in establishing the Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (CEIA-RD).
