Haiti forced to change World Cup jersey after FIFA objection

Haiti’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a double setback after FIFA barred the national team from wearing its newly designed blue jersey and midfielder Leverton Pierre was ruled out of the tournament with an injury.

The jersey, created by Colombian sportswear company Saeta, was intended to debut at the World Cup and featured an illustration inspired by the Battle of Vertières, the 1803 victory that paved the way for Haiti’s independence from France. The design included the image of a figure raising a flag on a hilltop, a symbol widely associated with Haiti’s struggle for freedom and national identity.

FIFA requested modifications to the uniform, arguing that the image could be interpreted as conveying a political or militaristic message. Under the organization’s regulations, equipment used in FIFA competitions cannot contain political, religious, discriminatory, or offensive symbols. Neither FIFA nor tournament organizers have publicly detailed the decision.

Saeta and Haitian football officials rejected the interpretation, insisting that the design was intended as a historical tribute rather than a political statement. The manufacturer described the jersey as a celebration of Haitian resilience, pride, and independence, noting that the blue color represents the sea while the red symbolizes the nation’s strength and passion.

The decision comes as Haiti prepares for its first World Cup appearance in 52 years. The Caribbean nation last competed at the tournament in 1974 and secured its return after an impressive qualifying campaign in which it eliminated regional powers Honduras and Costa Rica.

Adding to the team’s challenges, the Haitian Football Federation announced that midfielder Leverton Pierre will miss the World Cup after medical examinations revealed an injury to his right adductor muscle. Defender Garven Metusala, who plays for Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the United States, has been called up as his replacement.

Haiti opens its World Cup campaign against Scotland before facing Brazil and Morocco in Group C. Despite the setbacks, the team hopes to build on the momentum of its historic qualification and represent a nation where football remains a powerful source of pride and unity.
