Hurricane season enters its final month of cyclonic activity

Santo Domingo.- The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season enters its final month of cyclonic activity this Sunday, with a total of ten named storms and under the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, which has limited the formation of atmospheric systems this year.

Of that total, only one became a hurricane (Isaias), reaching category 3 but not affecting the Caribbean region.

Experts predicted three to eight named storms for this season, a forecast that could mark the second consecutive below-average season.

A below-average season occurs when fewer than 14 named storms form, as in 2025, when only thirteen formed.

The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1st and ends on November 30th each year.

The decline in tropical system formation is linked to the El Niño phenomenon, which can cause drought in some areas and heavy rains in others.

It also limits cyclone formation through its “wind shear,” as it has done this year in the Atlantic.
