Iberostar Hotels & Resorts and UNDP launch alliance for a more resilient tourism sector
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a strategic alliance to promote more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient tourism value chains in the Dominican Republic, focusing on environmental responsibility, climate resilience, and support for local suppliers and MSMEs linked to the tourism industry.
The agreement, signed by Alejandro Francisco Ferrer Alcalde and Ana María Díaz, includes initiatives aimed at decarbonizing the tourism supply chain, strengthening supplier capabilities, encouraging responsible production and consumption practices, and improving climate risk management and operational resilience.
The partnership will also create spaces for dialogue and collaboration among the private sector, academia, financial institutions, and government entities to advance sustainability in tourism. Priority areas include emissions reduction, sustainable finance, environmental and social standards, and training programs for local businesses.
Ana María Díaz highlighted the importance of cooperation between the private sector and international organizations in driving sustainable transformation, while Ferrer said the initiative aligns with Iberostar’s global responsible tourism strategy, Wave of Change. He emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to the Dominican Republic and its goal of building a stronger and more competitive tourism ecosystem through collaboration and positive impact initiatives.
The alliance also plans to develop forums, awareness campaigns, and publications focused on sustainability, competitiveness, and risk management in the tourism sector as part of broader efforts to support the Dominican Republic’s human and economic development.
