Indomet calls on Dominicans to stay alert as hurricane season begins June 1
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Institute of Meteorology urged residents to remain informed and prepared ahead of the start of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season on June 1, which runs through November 30. Although international forecasts suggest slightly below-normal activity this year, authorities warned that the Dominican Republic could still face significant impacts from tropical systems.
Indomet director Gloria Ceballos said the institution has activated its technical and operational preparedness plans to provide continuous monitoring and timely information throughout the season. She emphasized that even one storm can cause serious damage and encouraged the public to follow official weather bulletins and guidance from emergency agencies.
Forecasts from Colorado State University predict 13 named storms, including six hurricanes and two major hurricanes during the 2026 season. Meanwhile, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration projects between eight and 14 named storms, with up to six hurricanes possible. Indomet explained that the potential development of the El Niño climate pattern could reduce cyclone activity in the Atlantic by increasing wind shear, particularly during the peak months of August and September.
The agency also announced the launch of its “Get Informed on Time with Indomet” campaign, aimed at promoting prevention, preparedness, and public access to official meteorological information during hurricane season.
