Indomet warns of flash floods, landslides as rain continues

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported that a trough and southeasterly winds will continue to produce humid and unstable conditions across the Dominican Republic, with rainfall expected in several regions.

During the morning, showers of varying intensity, thunderstorms, and wind gusts are expected mainly along the Caribbean coast. In the afternoon, rainfall will spread to parts of the northwest, border area, Central Mountain Range, Cibao Valley, and southeast.

Indomet said it modified its weather alert levels due to the potential for flash floods, rising rivers and streams, and landslides. San Juan, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, El Seibo, San Pedro de Macorís, Pedernales, Hato Mayor, Barahona, Independencia, and Bahoruco are under alerts, while La Altagracia, La Romana, Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Azua, San José de Ocoa, Peravia, and Monte Plata remain under advisories.

Temperatures will remain hot due to southeasterly winds. Indomet advised residents to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, limit direct sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and remain in cool, well-ventilated areas.

The agency also urged operators of small and medium-sized vessels along the Atlantic coast to exercise caution near the coastline due to strong winds and abnormal waves. Maritime activities on both coasts should be conducted carefully during periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and reduced visibility.
