Italian Embassy in Santo Domingo celebrates Republic Day
Santo Domingo.- The Embassy of Italy in Santo Domingo celebrated Italy’s Republic Day with a traditional reception held in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The event brought together diplomatic representatives, government officials, and members of the Italian and Dominican communities to highlight the strong ties between both nations.
Italian Ambassador Sergio Maffettone emphasized the longstanding historical, cultural, and economic relationship between Italy and the Dominican Republic. He highlighted the contributions of Italians and people of Italian descent to Dominican society, as well as the importance of the Dominican community living in Italy, one of the largest abroad, and the active Italian community in the Dominican Republic.
The ambassador also underscored the growing economic partnership between the two countries, noting that Italian foreign direct investment in the Dominican Republic reached a record US$371 million in 2025. He additionally welcomed ITA Airways’s announcement of a new direct route between Rome and Santo Domingo scheduled to begin operations in November 2026.
Representing the Dominican government, Deputy Foreign Minister Francisco Caraballo praised the historic friendship between the two countries and recognized Italy’s role as an important partner in the Dominican Republic’s development.
