Italy Ambassador highlights new Rome-Santo Domingo flight
Santo Domingo.- Italian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic Sergio Maffettone highlighted the launch of ITA Airways’ direct Rome-Santo Domingo flight on November 30, 2026, saying the new route will strengthen tourism and business ties between the two countries.
The new service will complement existing air connections between Italy and Dominican destinations including Punta Cana and La Romana, as well as connections with Milan.
Maffettone said approximately 100,000 Italian tourists visit the Dominican Republic each year, adding that he expects the number to continue growing. He also pointed to the promotion of Dominican tourism on Italian television as a way to increase the country’s visibility among European travelers.
The ambassador also highlighted growing business exchanges, noting the participation of representatives from the Puntacana Group, Inicia Group and other Dominican companies in meetings in Rome.
His remarks came during an event announcing scholarships to train 20 Tourist Police (Politur) officers in Italian, with support from Casa de Italia. The officers serve in destinations including the Colonial City, Boca Chica, Juan Dolio, Bayahibe and La Romana, where Italian-language skills can help them assist visitors.
