JCE warns of consequences for failing to renew ID card before March 2027
Santo Domingo.- The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo, urged citizens to renew their identity and electoral cards before the March 31, 2027 deadline, warning that the old document will no longer be valid for official procedures after that date.
Jáquez Liranzo said failure to obtain the new card could create difficulties with banking transactions, employment, salary payments and other administrative procedures. He encouraged citizens to complete the process during November and December rather than waiting until the deadline.
The renewal process began on April 12, 2026, and will run through March 31, 2027, in the Dominican Republic. For Dominicans living abroad, the process began in May 2026 and will continue until January 2028.
The official explained that the new ID card features more than 100 security measures, including a cryptographic chip and biometric verification. He clarified that it does not include geolocation or tracking capabilities.
The JCE plans to issue the new document to approximately nine million people, including voters, minors, members of the Armed Forces and National Police, and foreigners with legal status in the country. The institution has 204 registration centers nationwide and 27 service offices abroad.
Jáquez Liranzo also highlighted the JCE’s Civil Registry functions, noting that the institution maintains more than 17 million digitized records, including over 13 million birth certificates. Between April 2021 and November 2, 2026, the JCE processed nearly 13 million civil status records involving births, marriages, divorces and deaths.

So have they started issuing to legal residents the plastic yet?
