Jet Set Justice Movement calls Jalao “Antonio Espaillat’s second Jet Set”

Santo Domingo.- Relatives of the victims and survivors of the Jet Set tragedy held a peaceful vigil Wednesday outside Jalao, in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City, to remember the 236 people who died and demand measures to prevent similar tragedies.

Carrying photographs and candles, members of the Jet Set Justice Movement described Jalao as “Antonio Espaillat’s second Jet Set,” noting that the establishment is also linked to the businessman and hosts live music, parties, dancing, alcohol sales and public gatherings.

According to the group, Jalao closed on April 11, 2025, three days after the Jet Set tragedy, and reopened on May 3 of the same year, resuming events and live performances less than a month later.

The families questioned how a person under investigation and facing legal proceedings related to the country’s deadliest tragedy of its kind could continue operating another entertainment venue with similar characteristics.

They called on authorities to publicly disclose the inspection reports, permits, authorized capacity, evacuation plans and safety controls applied to Jalao before and after its reopening.

The vigil was held peacefully and without incident, with participants emphasizing that their main demand is greater transparency and guarantees that a tragedy of this magnitude will not happen again.
