La Altagracia leads Dominican Republic in meat and milk production with more than 215,000 cattle

La Altagracia.- La Altagracia province has more than 215,000 head of cattle, making it the Dominican Republic’s leading province for meat and milk production, according to Agriculture Minister Francisco Oliverio Espaillat Bencosme.

Speaking at the opening of the 35th Eastern Region Agricultural Fair, organized by the Nisibón Livestock Association (Agani) in La Otra Banda, Higüey, the minister highlighted the livestock sector’s contribution to employment, food production and the regional economy.

Espaillat Bencosme reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting producers through stronger veterinary and animal health services, technical assistance, genetic improvement, financing and technological innovation aimed at increasing productivity and profitability.

During the event, authorities also delivered a modern packing plant to Agani, which is expected to strengthen the association’s infrastructure, improve producers’ capabilities and add value to local livestock production.

Founded in 1969, Agani has more than 1,000 members and represents livestock producers across La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Romana and Monte Plata. Its president, Pedro Castillo, praised the government’s support for the sector and described the new facility as an important contribution to producers in the region.

The fair, which runs through August 16, features more than 530 head of cattle from different provinces. Activities include dairy competitions, livestock judging, genetic auctions, family events, traditional games and artistic performances.
