Leonel Fernández leads OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Colombia
Colombia.- Former Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernández has begun his role in Colombia as head of the Organization of American States Electoral Observation Mission for the presidential elections scheduled for May 31.

The mission includes 96 observers and specialists from 24 countries deployed across 26 Colombian departments, the Capital District, and five international cities — Madrid, Barcelona, New York, Miami, and Washington, D.C. — to oversee voting by Colombian citizens abroad.

Since May 19, OAS specialists have participated in technical activities tied to the electoral process, including simulations and tests of vote-counting and results transmission systems. The mission will evaluate the organization of the elections, voting abroad, electoral technology, campaign financing, electoral justice, and security measures.

Fernández and his team will also assess campaign developments, media coverage, and digital communication strategies while meeting with electoral authorities, government officials, presidential candidates, civil society representatives, and diplomats.

The deployment marks the 25th electoral observation mission carried out by the OAS in Colombia and is funded by Brazil, Canada, Spain, the United States, France, and Italy.
