Luis Abinader extends the validity of driver’s licenses for people over 65.
President Luis Abinader issued Decree 330-26 this Friday, amending Article 21 of the Driver’s License Regulations to update license validity periods and strengthen road safety in the Dominican Republic. The decree also allows individuals over 65 to renew their licenses for a period longer than the current two-year term.
The provision is based on Law No. 63-17 on Mobility, Land Transport, Transit and Road Safety, which serves as the regulatory framework governing mobility and vehicular circulation in the country, establishing measures aimed at ensuring safe transit and protecting users of public roads.
New validity periods
The decree establishes that driver’s licenses for categories 01, 02, and 05 will remain valid for 4 years until the holder reaches 75 years of age. After that age, renewal will be required every two years.
Meanwhile, for categories 03 and 04, the validity period will be 3 years until age 75, after which it must be renewed annually.
The regulations also stipulate that the validity period may be reduced if, during the issuance or renewal process, it is determined that the driver has an illness or condition that may worsen and affect safe driving.
The decree maintains the periodic evaluations established in the Driver’s License Regulations, which are intended to verify that drivers retain the physical, mental, and aptitude conditions necessary to operate motor vehicles.
Furthermore, it is established that no driver may operate a motor vehicle on public roads with an expired license. In case of non-compliance, the competent authority will refer the case to the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation ( INTRANT ), in accordance with the provisions of Law 63-17.
The provision instructs the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation to adopt the necessary administrative measures to ensure the proper implementation of the regulatory modification.
