Malecón Deportivo draws 40,000 visitors in first month

Santo Domingo.- The National District Mayor’s Office reported that the Malecón Deportivo has attracted around 40,000 visitors since its inauguration one month ago, reflecting strong public support for the new recreational and sports space along the capital’s waterfront.

Since opening on April 23, the nearly two-kilometer redevelopment project promoted by Mayor Carolina Mejía and President Luis Abinader has hosted weddings, birthdays, sporting events, and family activities. Major events held at the site include the Ofit SDRun5K and Carrefour 10K races, which together drew thousands of participants and spectators.

The city government highlighted that the revitalized waterfront now forms part of a 5.8-kilometer recovered coastal area, described as the largest redevelopment effort ever carried out along the southern coast of Santo Domingo. Authorities also announced that the popular music group Bonyé will return for another public concert at the venue on May 29 after attracting large crowds during the inaugural celebration.

Meanwhile, work continues on the upcoming Paseo 30 de Mayo project, which will include sports facilities, green areas, bike paths, and a modern speed skating rink designed to host events during the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026. Officials say the initiative is part of a broader plan to reconnect the city with its waterfront while promoting recreation, sports, and urban renewal.
