Marileidy Paulino opens 2026 Diamond League season in Doha
Doha, Qatar.- Dominican Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino will launch her 2026 Diamond League campaign this Friday in Doha, Qatar, as she continues her pursuit of a fourth title in the prestigious track and field circuit and aims to move closer to the women’s 400-meter world record.
The 29-year-old sprinter enters the season opener after posting a time of 49.89 seconds at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on June 5, placing her among the world’s top performers this year. Paulino remains one of the most accomplished athletes in the event, holding the third-fastest 400-meter time in history after clocking 47.98 seconds at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she earned the silver medal behind American star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.
A three-time Diamond League champion, Paulino is seeking another circuit crown after winning titles in 2022, 2023, and 2024. She has also enjoyed success in Doha, claiming victories at the Qatar meet in both 2022 and 2023. This year’s race will feature a strong field that includes Poland’s Natalia Bukowiecka, Chile’s Martina Weil, and Cuba’s Roxana Gómez, although neither McLaughlin-Levrone nor Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser is entered in the event.
Paulino begins the season with major goals ahead, including the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games and the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest in September. The Dominican star has repeatedly expressed her desire to challenge the long-standing women’s 400-meter world record of 47.60 seconds, set by Germany’s Marita Koch in 1985.
The Dominican Republic will also be represented in Doha by Alexander Ogando, who is scheduled to compete in the men’s 200 meters. The meet will feature several other world-class athletes, including Cuban triple jump stars Leyanis Pérez and Davisleydi Velazco, Portuguese Olympic medalist Pedro Pablo Pichardo, American hurdler Cordell Tinch, Greek pole vaulter Emmanouil Karalis, and Qatari high jump icon Mutaz Essa Barshim.
As one of the world’s leading sprinters and the reigning Olympic champion, Paulino’s return to the Diamond League is expected to be one of the highlights of the athletics season, with fans closely watching her quest for another title and a historic challenge to the 400-meter world record.
