Marileidy Paulino wins Doha Diamond League opener
Qatar.- Dominican Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino made a statement in her first international race of the year, winning the women’s 400 meters at the 2026 Diamond League meeting in Doha, Qatar, with a season-best time of 48.91 seconds.
Competing at the Qatar Sports Club, Paulino dominated the race from start to finish, securing victory in the opening Diamond League appearance of her 2026 campaign. The performance not only earned her first place but also marked her fastest time of the season, reinforcing her position among the world’s elite 400-meter runners.
Poland’s Natalia Bukowiecka finished second with a time of 50.10 seconds, while Cuba’s Roxana Gómez placed third in 50.23 seconds. Paulino crossed the finish line more than a second ahead of her nearest competitor, highlighting the gap between the Dominican star and the rest of the field.
The victory is another milestone for the Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalist, who continues to build on an impressive career that has made her one of the most recognizable athletes in international track and field. Entering the race with the objective of posting the best time of the competition, Paulino accomplished her goal with authority and opened the Diamond League season in winning fashion.
The triumph also serves as an important step in her preparation for the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, which will take place from July 24 to August 8. Paulino is expected to lead the Dominican delegation in the women’s 400 meters, an event in which she captured gold at the previous edition of the Games in San Salvador.
