Milton Guevara says tourism depends on security and social order in the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- Milton Ray Guevara, president of the Commission for Monitoring and Socialization of the Penal Code, warned that tourism is incompatible with disorder and social instability, emphasizing the importance of combating crime and strengthening respect for the law.
Speaking at APEC University during the presentation of the commission’s work plan to promote the new Penal Code, Ray Guevara stressed the need for citizens to understand the law and the rules governing social coexistence.
He said compliance with the law and crime prevention are essential to maintaining public order and security, particularly as the Dominican Republic continues to position tourism as one of the main drivers of its economy.
The country has experienced sustained growth in tourism in recent years, attracting millions of international visitors and generating significant employment, foreign exchange and investment. Major destinations such as Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and La Romana depend on a stable and secure environment to maintain the sector’s growth.
Against this backdrop, Ray Guevara emphasized that strengthening the rule of law is not only a matter of public safety but also an important factor in protecting the Dominican Republic’s tourism industry and its international reputation as a destination.
The commission is working to promote greater public awareness of the new Penal Code and encourage citizens to understand the legal framework and responsibilities that govern life in society.
