MIREX facilitates safe return of four Dominicans who left Russia after rejecting military contracts

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) said it has taken steps to facilitate the safe return of four Dominican citizens who traveled to Russia intending to join its Armed Forces but later decided not to do so.

The four nationals contacted the Dominican Embassy in Russia on October 23 to report their situation and inform officials that they had decided not to sign contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense.

After communicating their decision to Russian military authorities, the four were provided with air tickets to Moscow, where Dominican diplomatic officials received them and provided food, accommodation and logistical support.

Under instructions from Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó and coordination with Vice Minister of Consular and Migration Affairs Opinio Díaz, MIREX purchased return tickets for the four Dominicans to travel back to the Dominican Republic.

The ministry said the citizens remained in a safe location throughout the process and were not exposed to threats to their safety or integrity.

MIREX emphasized that the assistance is part of the Dominican government’s efforts to protect and assist nationals abroad, particularly those in vulnerable situations or requiring diplomatic and consular support.
