MIREX hires legal counsel to assist Dominicans in Russia
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican government has hired legal counsel in Russia to assess the legal status of Dominican citizens residing there who have reportedly become involved in activities related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) announced.
The legal team will provide specialized advice on Russian law, examine the contractual arrangements involving Dominican nationals and determine available legal options to assist them.
As part of its ongoing monitoring, a MIREX delegation led by Deputy Minister of Consular and Migration Affairs Opinio Díaz Vargas will travel to Moscow on Wednesday to follow up on identified cases and strengthen assistance and protection efforts.
The delegation, which includes Miguel Reyes Taveras, director of Protection for Nationals Abroad, will meet with Russian Foreign Ministry officials to obtain updated information on the Dominicans’ situation and explore mechanisms for advancing the relevant procedures.
The mission will also coordinate with the Dominican Embassy in Moscow, headed by Ambassador Alejandro Arias Zarzuela, to establish a diplomatic, consular and legal strategy for following the cases.
MIREX reiterated that the protection of Dominicans abroad is a priority of the administration of President Luis Abinader and said it will continue taking diplomatic, consular and legal measures to assist nationals within the possibilities allowed in each case.
