MIREX presents initiative to create alliance of Caribbean island territories

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic) presented the Transcaribe Agreement during a virtual meeting with Caribbean overseas countries and territories, proposing a new framework for regional cooperation, economic integration, and joint development across the insular Caribbean.

Representatives from Montserrat, Curaçao, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, Saint Martin, and Aruba joined the discussions, led by Vice Minister Hugo Rivera Fernández on behalf of Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez.

The initiative aims to create a shared economic development zone to boost trade, food security, technical cooperation, and connectivity while addressing common challenges such as sargassum and environmental sustainability. Participating delegations welcomed the proposal and agreed to review a ministerial declaration of principles, with the goal of negotiating a comprehensive regional agreement by the end of the year.
