National power demand hits record 4,203 MW in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) reached a new all-time high in electricity demand on Monday, supplying 4,203 megawatts (MW) of instantaneous power at 8:56 p.m., according to Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos.

Santos said the system successfully met the increased demand, marking the fourth consecutive year that the country has broken its July electricity consumption record. He noted that additional peaks are expected through the rest of July and into August and September, driven by high temperatures, increased air conditioning use, and continued economic activity.

The new record surpasses the previous high of 4,195.26 MW set on July 23. Earlier this month, the system also reached successive records of 4,166.52 MW and 4,185.11 MW.

The minister credited the system’s performance to investments that have expanded and diversified the country’s electricity generation capacity, strengthening the resilience of the national energy matrix.
