New director of Intrant faces the challenge of reducing accidents on Punta Cana highways
David Collado, Minister of Tourism, said that the ‘National Plan for Tourist Road Signage’, together with RD-Vial, is only the first step in a series of measures and resolutions to be approved to strengthen road safety in the DR as a tourist destination.
In this sense, he indicated that one of the main challenges Juan Manuel Méndez faces at the head of the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transport (Intrant) is to develop a strategic plan to reduce road accidents, especially in Bávaro-Punta Cana.
“In that Tourist Boulevard of the East, we must seek corrective measures so that people do not lose their lives, neither Dominicans nor foreigners, and it is a mission that we all have, together with the President of the Republic. These are issues that we are observing and we are going to give answers,” he added.
He said that tourist destinations will also be organized along the road. “We are going to organize Bávaro-Punta Cana, Las Terrenas, Samaná, Puerto Plata, Bayahibe… because we believe in a much more organized and advanced destination in protecting the visitor outside the hotel plant.”
“This step in road safety improvements is important, it is our vision of long-term sustainability, because the countries of competition have been affected by different situations, unfortunately, and the DR must take advantage of it to have a better management of safety on tourist roads,” he said.
Collado said that, with a strong and consistent sector in attracting tourists, the mission now is to consolidate the foundations so that the legacy and history of growth are sustained over time by improving road infrastructure.
“We work so that the Dominican Republic can continue to be a power and world benchmark in tourism,” he said.
