New Foreign Minister Ito Bisonó sets priorities for Dominican foreign policy

Santo Domingo.- Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó received formal greetings from members of the Diplomatic Corps, international organizations and Consular Corps accredited in the Dominican Republic following his appointment as head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX).

During the meeting at the Foreign Ministry’s Convention Center, Bisonó outlined the main priorities of his administration and pledged to work closely with foreign diplomats and representatives of international organizations in the country.

The minister said Dominican foreign policy will continue along the course established by President Luis Abinader, focusing on defending national interests, promoting Dominican values and creating development opportunities for citizens.

Bisonó also called for continued institutional strengthening and professionalization of the foreign service, while advancing toward a more modern, accessible and results-oriented Foreign Ministry capable of responding to an increasingly complex international environment.

Three pillars of foreign policy

Bisonó identified three main pillars for Dominican foreign policy: protecting and integrating Dominicans abroad; promoting exports, investment and economic opportunities; and defending democracy, human rights and the principles of international coexistence.

He also emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, deepening existing partnerships and identifying new opportunities for cooperation with other governments.

At the multilateral level, Bisonó reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s commitment to multilateralism, international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes, as well as greater international cooperation to address challenges that cross national borders.
