Photos show severe damage at Viva Dominicus Beach after fire in Bayahibe

Images published by the outlet Arecoa show the extent of the fire damage at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham hotel in Bayahibe, La Romana, an incident that has deeply impacted the Dominican Republic’s tourism sector.

The fire occurred on Friday, June 19, when a small blaze broke out at the resort. Emergency protocols were immediately activated, allowing the safe evacuation of all guests and staff. Tourists were relocated to nearby accommodations, including the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace—currently operating normally—as well as hotels in Bayahibe and the Miches tourist area.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire through a technical commission. The resort also confirmed a fatality related to the incident, with the official cause of death pending forensic analysis.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire spread rapidly due to the property’s thatched roofing materials, which fueled the flames across key structures, including the reception area. The images published by Arecoa illustrate the severity of the damage.

What area did the fire start? Is there a count of how many guest rooms were destroyed?
