President Abinader attends installation of new bishop of La Vega Diocese

La Vega.- President Luis Abinader attended the installation of Bishop Andrés Napoleón Romero Cárdenas as the new head of the Diocese of La Vega, following his appointment by Pope Leo XIV. The ceremony took place at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in La Vega and was presided over by Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Piergiorgio Bertold.

In his first homily as bishop, Romero Cárdenas pledged to lead a Church that is close to the people, open to dialogue and collaboration, while remaining free of political divisions. He said he aims to work alongside government authorities, educational institutions, businesses and community organizations in pursuit of the common good.

The new bishop also emphasized his commitment to preserving the country’s religious and cultural traditions while promoting values such as life, family, justice, peace, education, human dignity and environmental protection.

Romero Cárdenas identified youth ministry as one of his pastoral priorities, announcing plans to strengthen programs that support young people through coordinated pastoral initiatives.

The Diocese of La Vega serves the provinces of La Vega, Hermanas Mirabal, Monseñor Nouel and Sánchez Ramírez, encompassing 63 parishes and more than 120 priests.
