Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader held a video call Tuesday with Dominican NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns to congratulate him on helping the New York Knicks win the NBA championship, a historic achievement that has filled the Dominican Republic with pride.

The conversation, conducted from the National Palace and joined by Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz, focused on Towns’ dedication, discipline, and impact as a role model for Dominican youth. The player thanked the president for the recognition and spoke about the significance of winning the title and representing the Dominican Republic on basketball’s biggest stage.

During the call, Towns revealed his intention to bring the Larry O’Brien Trophy to the country so Dominican fans can celebrate the Knicks’ championship, their first NBA title since 1973. Abinader and Cruz welcomed the initiative, highlighting the national pride generated by the achievement of a player with Dominican roots.

Towns also capped off the best postseason of his career, averaging 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game, while shooting 45.6% from three-point range and posting a playoff-best plus-minus of +258.
