Pro Consumidor: Dominican Republic has enough chicken to meet Christmas demand

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic has sufficient chicken production to meet demand during the upcoming Christmas holidays, according to Eddy Alcántara, executive director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor).

Alcántara said chicken prices in the Dominican Republic have remained stable, with a pound selling between RD$79 and RD$84 in markets and supermarkets across the country over the past 10 months.

He attributed the price stability to strong production levels in the national poultry sector, which have maintained an adequate supply and reduced the risk of shortages during the holiday season.

The announcement comes as demand for chicken typically increases during Christmas and New Year celebrations. The Dominican poultry sector has also reported plans to increase available supplies for December. The Dominican Association of Poultry Producers (ADA) estimates that around 25 million chickens will be available during the Christmas season, in addition to approximately two million frozen birds held in storage.

National production has strengthened in recent years. Government data show that the Dominican Republic produced an average of 21.8 million chickens per month in 2025, with production reaching 25.2 million units in December, according to figures presented by President Luis Abinader.

Pro Consumidor has also highlighted government measures supporting poultry producers, including mechanisms designed to facilitate the commercialization of chicken and reduce losses associated with periods of higher production. Recent reports indicate that authorities have ruled out difficulties in supplying chicken and pork during the end-of-year holidays.
