Puerto Plata Cable Car renovation to begin October 3 with US$20 million investment

Renovation of the Puerto Plata Cable Car will begin Saturday, October 3, as authorities launch a US$20 million modernization project aimed at improving capacity, reducing travel time and upgrading the attraction’s operating and safety systems.

The comprehensive rehabilitation was presented by Presidency Minister José Ignacio Paliza and Tourism Minister David Collado. The project will be financed by the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) and the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC).

One of the main changes will be the modernization of the Puerto Plata Cable Car cabins, increasing their capacity from 18 to 50 passengers. Authorities expect the upgrade to reduce waiting times and allow the attraction to accommodate more visitors.

The journey to the top will also become faster. Travel time is expected to drop from eight minutes to five minutes with the installation of a new electromechanical system capable of operating at 10 meters per second.

The modernization project includes three main stages: studies and designs, execution of the renovation work, and assembly of the new cable car system.

The project also calls for the construction of a new electrical supply line to support the upgraded infrastructure.

Why the Puerto Plata Cable Car was closed

The Puerto Plata Cable Car has been closed since June 2024 after it lacked the safety certification required for operations.

The authorities subsequently moved forward with plans to rehabilitate and modernize the attraction. The bidding process for the project was completed earlier this year, allowing the renovation work to move ahead.

The modernization is expected to restore one of Puerto Plata’s main tourist attractions while providing greater transportation capacity and faster service for visitors.
