Puerto Plata launches plan to become a more accessible tourism destination

Puerto Plata is moving toward a more inclusive tourism model with the signing of the “Puerto Plata, Accessible Destination” agreement between the Puerto Plata Destination Tourism Cluster, Travegali, and the Ministry of Tourism, with support from the municipal government.

The initiative, led by Tourism Minister David Collado, aims to make Puerto Plata the second tourist destination in the Dominican Republic with a comprehensive accessibility model, allowing people with disabilities, older adults, and other visitors with accessibility needs to enjoy the destination with greater safety, dignity, and independence.

Travegali President Rafael Blanco explained that the project will begin with a comprehensive assessment of accessibility conditions throughout the destination, followed by a roadmap to gradually improve tourism infrastructure and services.

The initiative will also include workforce training, improvements in communication and digital platforms, and an international marketing strategy aimed at the growing accessible tourism market.

Implementation will progressively involve hotels, restaurants, tour operators, parks, shops, museums, beaches, transportation companies, the port and airport, public institutions, and community organizations.

The signing brought together tourism authorities, local government officials, private-sector representatives, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders involved in the development of Puerto Plata.
