Puerto Rico evaluates 700 MW power cable project linking to the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Caribbean Transmission Development Co. (CTDC) has formally submitted a proposal to the government of Puerto Rico to develop the Hostos Project, a submarine cable initiative that would connect Puerto Rico’s power grid with the Dominican Republic.

The project envisions a high-voltage undersea transmission line capable of delivering up to 700 megawatts of electricity, along with new generation capacity dedicated exclusively to Puerto Rico. CTDC said the interconnection would strengthen the island’s energy security by improving grid stability, resilience, and flexibility while providing access to external power sources.

The proposal was filed with Puerto Rico’s Public-Private Partnerships Authority and follows several years of technical, environmental, and regulatory studies in both Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. According to CTDC, the Hostos Project is in an advanced stage of development and could play a key role in diversifying Puerto Rico’s energy mix and enhancing its ability to respond to outages and emergencies.
