Rain expected over several provinces; Indomet monitoring a system with an 80% chance of becoming a cyclone.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, September 19, 2026 – The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported that local downpours and thunderstorms are expected in several provinces of the country on Saturday afternoon, due to sufficient humidity and atmospheric instability, along with local effects.

The institution explained that during the morning hours, isolated showers and thunderstorms could occur over sectors of Santo Domingo, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, and San Cristóbal.

He added that some localized downpours with thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon across Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, Sánchez Ramírez, and Monseñor Nouel. Meanwhile, moderate to heavy downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, are expected over northern San Juan and Azua, as well as in Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, and other nearby areas. These conditions will diminish by nightfall.

Hot temperatures

Regarding temperatures, Indomet indicated that a hot, humid environment will prevail across much of the country, with a high heat index.

Given these conditions, the public is advised to drink plenty of water, wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm without proper protection, and try to stay in cool, well-ventilated places.

It also reminds us that children, the elderly, and pregnant women are more vulnerable to the effects of high temperatures.

Cyclone watch

The agency reported that it is monitoring an area of ​​disorganized showers and thunderstorms associated with a low-pressure system several hundred kilometers southwest of the Azores. This disturbance has an 80% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours and over the next seven days.
