Rainieri Cultural Center inaugurated in Punta Cana as new cultural attraction

President Luis Abinader inaugurated the Rainieri Cultural Center in Punta Cana on Friday, officially opening a new cultural attraction designed to showcase Dominican history, traditions, and arts to residents and international visitors.

The project, developed over more than two decades by Grupo Puntacana founder Frank Rainieri and his wife, Haydée Kuret de Rainieri, aims to expand Punta Cana’s cultural offerings and give visitors a deeper understanding of the Dominican Republic beyond its beaches and tourism attractions.

According to Arecoa, Rainieri said the idea for a cultural center emerged nearly 30 years ago after conversations with young people and community representatives in Higüey. The project regained momentum in 2018 following an exhibition dedicated to designer Oscar de la Renta at Centro León and took definitive shape in 2022 after a visit to the Soumaya Museum in Mexico.

The founders envisioned the Rainieri Cultural Center as a cultural landmark for Punta Cana and a legacy for future generations. Its exhibitions explore Dominican history, traditions, everyday life, and artistic expressions through objects, images, and interactive resources.

Rainieri said the center is also intended to reach the millions of tourists who arrive through Punta Cana International Airport but may leave the country without learning about its history and culture. He also highlighted the center’s role in strengthening the sense of identity and belonging among the more than 300,000 people living in the Punta Cana area.

Designed by architect Juan Caro, the center’s architecture draws inspiration from the communal nest of the palmchat, the Dominican Republic’s national bird. The facility includes permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, educational and workshop areas, open spaces, and a 282-seat auditorium for plays, concerts, film screenings, lectures, and other cultural events.

The project brought together teams and advisers from the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Chile, and Mexico, along with Grupo Puntacana and other collaborators involved in its development.

The Rainieri Cultural Center will open to the public on Wednesday, October 28. Admission is RD$500 for Dominican adults and RD$100 for children under 18. Non-resident foreign visitors will pay US$10 for adults and US$5 for children. Special rates will also be available for students, schools, and families.
