Rainieri Cultural Center launches La Cantera to showcase emerging Dominican artists

Punta Cana.- The Rainieri Cultural Center has launched La Cantera, a temporary exhibition space created to promote emerging artists and showcase new voices shaping the future of Dominican visual arts.

Located beside the Center’s auditorium, the approximately 35-square-meter space was designed to reduce the production and installation challenges often faced by young artists. Unlike the Center’s main temporary exhibition hall, which spans more than 400 square meters, La Cantera allows artists to focus primarily on creating and presenting their work.

The initiative also seeks to encourage a new generation of art collectors and establish La Cantera as a space known for discovering artists who could eventually become part of the Dominican art scene.

“Visions of Yauya”

La Cantera opened its program with “Visions of Yauya,” an exhibition by writer and interdisciplinary artist José Carlos Nazario. The exhibition opened June 10 and will remain on display until mid-September.

The series was inspired by Nazario’s experiences during the pandemic, when he found a place for reflection and creative inspiration in the landscapes of the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve in Punta Cana.

The exhibition features four large-format works created with ink, watercolor, acrylic, turmeric, and coffee on paper. Rather than reproducing the landscape literally, Nazario reimagines it through memory, intuition, and imagination, drawing on techniques influenced by surrealist automatism.

Through the exhibition, the artist offers a different perspective of Punta Cana, moving beyond its traditional association with sun-and-beach tourism and presenting its natural environment as a source of artistic inspiration.

With La Cantera, the Rainieri Cultural Center aims to strengthen its support for Dominican talent while creating opportunities for interaction among artists, audiences, and collectors.

The nonprofit institution, located in Punta Cana, promotes Dominican culture through exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural activities, with particular emphasis on the historical and cultural heritage of the country’s eastern region.
