Santo Domingo celebrates 528 years as the Dominican Republic’s historic capital

Santo Domingo marked the 528th anniversary of its founding this Wednesday, celebrating its status as the first permanent European city established in the Americas and one of the region’s most important historical and cultural landmarks.

Founded on August 5, 1498, by Bartholomew Columbus, brother of Christopher Columbus, the settlement was established on the eastern bank of the Ozama River. It later became the administrative center of Spain’s colonial expansion in the Americas, serving as a political, economic and religious hub during the early colonial period.

More than five centuries later, Santo Domingo remains home to one of the hemisphere’s richest collections of colonial architecture. Its Colonial City was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 in recognition of its outstanding historical significance and its concentration of some of the earliest European buildings in the New World.

The district is home to iconic landmarks, including the First Cathedral of America, the Alcázar de Colón, once the residence of Diego Colón, son of Christopher Columbus, and the Ozama Fortress, widely recognized as the oldest military fortress built by Europeans in the Americas. Its cobblestone streets, plazas and centuries-old buildings continue to attract visitors from around the world and preserve the city’s colonial legacy.

Beyond its historical importance, Santo Domingo has evolved into the Dominican Republic’s political, economic and cultural capital, blending centuries of history with modern urban development. The city remains the country’s largest metropolitan area and a leading destination for tourism, commerce, education and government.
