Seismic activity: They warn about the country’s seismic vulnerability and call for building assessments

They specified that the Dominican Republic has more than 14 seismic faults, the most relevant being the Septentrional Fault, located in the north, and the Enriquillo Fault, located in the south.

The Foundation for Development and International Cooperation (FUDEC) held a discussion on seismic alerts, focused on guiding citizens on the preparation they should have in the event of an earthquake.

This initiative included the participation of two renowned professionals and academics: geographer and researcher Susana Hernández Peña and engineer Leonardo Reyes Madera, general director of the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (ONESVIE).

The discussion was moderated by José Luis Morillo Frías, president of FUDEC, who explained the organization’s commitment to promoting civic education.

During the event, the speakers agreed that seismic activity is a common natural phenomenon and that, therefore, we must learn to live with this reality. They also explained that the country needs to strengthen earthquake education so that citizens know how to react to these types of seismic events.
