Senate approves creation of Dominican Institute of Cassava

Santo Domingo.- The Senate approved in first reading a bill creating the Dominican Institute of Cassava (INDOCASABE), an initiative aimed at establishing a national policy to promote the production, processing, and export of cassava and cassava-based products in the Dominican Republic. The proposal, introduced by Senators Antonio Marte and Manuel María Rodríguez, would support cassava cultivation nationwide, provide technical guidance and access to agricultural financing for producers, and encourage scientific research and international cooperation in the sector.

Lawmakers also approved in first reading a bill declaring the tradition of the faceless doll of El Higüerito, in Moca, as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation, an initiative submitted by Senator Carlos Gómez.

During the session, senators passed several measures in second reading, including the designation of the Baní bypass as the “Rafael De Jesús Perelló Abreu Tourist Boulevard,” the declaration of “Los Toros de Monte Cristi” as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the naming of a sports complex in San Cristóbal after Douglas Miguel Hasbún José, and the recognition of September 10 as “Petromacorisano Pride Day.” The chamber also approved a resolution honoring Aura Migdalia Moscoso Pérez for her contributions to education and social development in Bahoruco.

Senate President Ricardo de los Santos announced that a special commission will be appointed next week to study proposed amendments to the Organic Law on States of Emergency. During the session, lawmakers observed a minute of silence in memory of photojournalist Franklin Guerrero, poet Isidro Ventura Guzmán, and Eden de Jesús. The Senate is scheduled to reconvene on June 12.

It has been mentioned when Ponce de Leon was governor of the Higuey area, his farm produced cassava. His cassava was part of ships stores for vessels returning to Spain, They, the vessels, stopped at Yuma (Higuey) to take on stores, to include cassava..The cassava had a long shelf life. It did not spoil during the trip… usually taking 30-60 days.
