Senate passes bill allocating confiscated assets to combat domestic violence

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Senate approved in second reading a bill amending Law 60-23 to create the National Institute for the Custody and Administration of Seized, Confiscated, and Forfeited Assets, with its board to be chaired by the Ministry of Finance.

The legislation earmarks funds generated from seized and confiscated assets to strengthen efforts against gender-based and domestic violence. Under the approved amendments, 40% of the resources will go to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to support prevention, victim protection, comprehensive care, and institutional response. The remaining 60% will be distributed among the Ministry of Women, the Ministry of Interior and Police, the Ministry of Education, and other relevant institutions for related programs and public policies.

During Monday’s extraordinary session, senators also approved in second reading a bill declaring May 16 as National Dominican Suffragists Day, aimed at preserving the legacy of the country’s suffrage movement and promoting civic education and women’s political participation. The legislation calls for annual educational activities, public recognition of outstanding women, and awareness campaigns.
