Sky Cana prepares to resume operations with Caribbean charters

Santo Domingo.- Sky Cana is preparing for a gradual return to the Dominican aviation market following a period of operational suspension and reorganization, with its initial focus on passenger charter flights within the Caribbean.

Frank Díaz González, president of Sky Cana and Sky Holding, said the company has maintained the brand and is implementing a plan to progressively resume operations.

As part of the process, Servicios de Transporte Aéreo Dominicano (SETRAD), an airline within the group operating under RAD 135 regulations, is acquiring an Embraer ERJ-145LR. The aircraft is expected to arrive in the Dominican Republic by the end of October 2026.

Following the required certification, registration and regulatory approvals, the aircraft is expected to join Sky Cana’s operations through a dry-lease agreement.

The airline’s first stage will focus on charter flights to selected Caribbean destinations. Díaz González said the company eventually plans to add a larger aircraft to expand its charter operations and assess the possibility of resuming scheduled services, depending on market conditions and regulatory approvals.

“We don’t intend to rebuild Sky Cana’s previous operations overnight,” Díaz González said, describing the return as a gradual process based on regulatory compliance, operational control and financial discipline.

He added that lessons learned from the airline’s previous operations have been incorporated into its new business model and will guide its expansion into the markets it initially plans to serve.
