Spain reaffirms support for Dominican efforts to protect crime victims

Santo Domingo.- Representatives of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Dominican Attorney General’s Office strengthened cooperation efforts during a visit by Álvaro Borrega, AECID’s Deputy Director for Cooperation with Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean, aimed at supporting initiatives focused on victims’ rights and access to justice.

During his visit, Borrega met with Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso and praised the work being carried out by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. He highlighted the alignment between both institutions and reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to supporting programs that protect vulnerable populations and strengthen the justice system.

Borrega participated in activities hosted by Spanish Ambassador Laura Oroz Ulibarri and toured the facilities of the National Service for Legal Representation of Victims’ Rights (Relevic), where he learned about the free legal assistance provided to victims of crime throughout the country.

The Spanish official expressed satisfaction with the use of AECID resources, emphasizing that the funds contributed by Spanish taxpayers are being effectively invested in initiatives that improve access to justice and protect victims’ rights. He also praised Relevic’s role in preventing revictimization and ensuring that victims receive legal guidance and support throughout judicial proceedings.

During the visit, Relevic Director María Rosalba Díaz Henríquez explained the institution’s model of legal representation and highlighted the recent incorporation of 100 new attorneys specialized in criminal law, bringing the organization’s total workforce to 142 lawyers operating across 37 offices nationwide.

Borrega also received updates on the Attorney General’s Institutional Strategic Plan 2026-2029 and the Vitalia Initiative, a program focused on coordinating specialized services for comprehensive care for women. He reiterated AECID’s commitment to continue supporting the Dominican Republic’s efforts to strengthen institutions, improve victim assistance services, and expand access to justice.
