Suspect in Santiago garbage truck driver’s murder arrested in Jamaica
One of the men accused in the April murder of garbage truck driver Deivy Carlos Abreu Quezada in Santiago has been located and arrested in Jamaica, according to lawyers representing the victim’s family.
Jhovanny de Jesús Metz Cruz, known as “Macho,” is identified as the alleged perpetrator in the case. He had been a fugitive since April 17, following a motorcycle chase involving Abreu on the streets of Santiago.
José Martínez Brito, an attorney for the victim’s family, said that Metz Cruz was located in Jamaican territory and that authorities are completing the necessary procedures to transfer him to the Dominican Republic, where he will face the allegations against him.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the incident began when several motorcyclists intercepted the truck Abreu was driving. The ensuing chase lasted approximately 23 minutes and ended near the Santiago Courthouse.
Investigators allege that Metz Cruz positioned his motorcycle in front of the truck, forcing Abreu to stop, and then participated in an assault that left the driver seriously injured.
Abreu Quezada, 40, was taken for medical treatment but later died from his injuries. He had worked as a truck driver for nine months and was the father of five children.
Authorities have arrested seven people in connection with the case, and a Santiago court ordered preventive detention for them.
The arrest of Metz Cruz in Jamaica marks a new development in the investigation as Dominican authorities work to bring him back to the country to face the charges.
