Tax revenue from tourism triples: it amounts to RD$45 billion

Tax revenue from tourism has tripled in the last decade, rising from around RD$15 billion to more than RD$45 billion last year, according to data presented by economist Nassim Alemany.

The behavior of tax revenues was presented as an example of tourism’s impact beyond its direct contribution to the Dominican economy.

During a meeting with journalists at the Dominican Republic Hotel and Tourism Association (Asonahores) Trade Show 2026, Alemany specified that the figures include taxes associated with tourism activity, such as income tax and other levies linked to the sector.

Also considered are fees related to passengers and other tax revenues associated with hotel and tourism activity, according to El Dinero.

The economist noted that the post-pandemic trajectory shows greater dynamism in sector-linked revenue than before 2020.

Alemany attributed this performance to the industry’s growth and its connections to other economic activities. Tourism is not limited to hotels and restaurants; it also demands goods and services from sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, commerce, transportation, and construction.

The effect is also seen in the industry’s purchases. According to the presentation, the tourism sector would have made purchases of approximately RD$220 billion during 2025.

Of that amount, some RD$68 billion corresponded to commerce; RD$26 billion to the manufacturing sector; RD$22 billion to construction; and RD$6.8 billion to transportation, according to the figures presented.

The increase in revenue coincides with the growing economic importance of tourism. Alemany estimated that the direct, indirect, and induced impact of tourism reached 15.9% of gross domestic product (GDP), compared to its direct contribution of 8.3%.
