“That’s why these things happen” Journalist reports accidental shooting by police officer while covering protests in Herrera

Journalist Anny Toribio Reynoso reported that she experienced tense moments while covering the protests in the Herrera neighborhood of Santo Domingo Oeste following the death of the young man Darlin Mercado during a police operation.

According to the journalist’s account in a post, one of the National Police officers fired a shot that she described as accidental, allegedly due to improper handling of his service weapon.

Toribio Reynoso stated that the incident endangered both the officer and the journalists covering the events.

According to her account, the incident occurred after the protest was already under control and the protesters had left the area, so they believed the area near the officers was the safest place to continue filming.

The journalist expressed concern about what happened and noted that the shot caused great alarm among those present, while also questioning the officer’s handling of the weapon.
