AILA: New technological system makes baggage handling more efficient
The Las Américas International Airport (AILA) is advancing in the modernization of its operational processes with the entry into operation of the first phase of the Baggage Handling System (BHS), a technological infrastructure that automates a large part of the outbound baggage journey and strengthens the processes of inspection, classification, and traceability of suitcases.
Luis José López, director of Communications for Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), explained that the system began operating in early June in the southern area of the terminal, corresponding to the first of the two major stages contemplated within the modernization project.
From the moment the passenger hands over their luggage at the check-in counters, the suitcases enter an automated network of conveyor belts, sensors, tag readers, and inspection equipment, which allows each piece to be controlled and directed to the corresponding sorting area before being transferred for loading onto the aircraft.
One of the central elements of the infrastructure is the ability to identify and monitor luggage throughout its journey, reducing reliance on manual processes and enabling more efficient management of suitcase flow within the terminal.
The platform also incorporates 360-degree scanning inspection technology, designed to strengthen security controls and expedite baggage processing. In addition, it includes artificial intelligence tools for generating baggage pre-alerts, as part of the evolution toward more automated airport processes based on real-time information.
For air operations, the modernization of the baggage system is a key component, as the efficient processing of suitcases is directly linked to coordination across check-in, inspection, sorting, and flight preparation.
Aerodom is currently working on the second phase of the project, which aims to continue extending the automated infrastructure and progressively transform baggage handling at AILA.
The modernization is not limited to the baggage system. The airport has also implemented improvements to other services, including version 2.0 of online parking payment, as part of a broader technological upgrade to the terminal.
With the implementation of the BHS, AILA incorporates infrastructure that responds to the growth of air operations through greater automation, processing capacity, traceability, and baggage control, elements that are increasingly relevant to the management of international airports.
