The weather is getting worse: storms and heavy downpours put the Dominican Republic on alert

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) raised the number of provinces under alert to 16 this Friday due to atmospheric conditions caused by a trough and a tropical wave that continue to affect much of the national territory.

The localities that are under green alert are Santiago, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, Elías Piña, Espaillat, National District, Valverde, San Juan, Dajabón, San Cristóbal, Monte Cristi, La Altagracia, San Pedro de Macorís, and Santiago Rodríguez.

Meanwhile, Hato Mayor and El Seibo are under a yellow alert.

According to the latest weather bulletin, moderate to heavy downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms and possible isolated hailstorms, could occur in different parts of the country during the next few hours.

The COE explained that these rains result from a combination of a trough in the upper levels of the troposphere and the movement of a tropical wave south of the national territory, phenomena that favor significant rainfall.

Given this situation, the agency urged the population, especially those residing in vulnerable areas near rivers, streams, and ravines, to stay attentive to official bulletins and adopt the necessary preventive measures.
