Tragedy: Dentist and her two children are fighting for their lives after an explosion: “The children are in critical condition”

The two minors who, along with their mother, dentist Loida Díaz Lima, suffered severe burns after an explosion on Friday morning in the apartment where they lived, located in the Andares del Mirador residential complex in the National District, remain hospitalized in “delicate” condition.

“The children are in delicate condition; they are in pediatric intensive care here (at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital),” said Kenia Díaz Lima, the dentist’s sister.

The family member stated that her nephews, a 12-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, have burns on 35% and 22% of their bodies, respectively.

“They have burns ranging from first to third degree,” Kenya said, adding that her sister “is more stable than the children, but she also has burns all over her body, from head to toe.”

He also added that the family had recently acquired the property through financing and had moved in on Thursday the 5th, after noon.

“They moved on Thursday afternoon, and on Friday at 8:30 in the morning they called me, telling me that there had been an accident, and that I should come quickly,” he explained.

The woman also recounted that the explosion occurred when one of the children connected a water dispenser.

“There was a gas leak, but it was from the pipes, which are for the washing machine and water heater connections. My sister didn’t have a gas washing machine or a water heater, but nothing was installed on the pipes; they didn’t have caps. So, there was that leak; they didn’t realize it, and when they connected the drinking fountain, the electricity sparked and caused the explosion,” he said.

The families are demanding a thorough investigation to clarify the circumstances of the explosion and that those responsible be held accountable.
