Transporters call for solution to preserve card payments at fuel stations
Santo Domingo.- Transportation businessman Williams Pérez Figuereo has voiced concern over the National Association of Gasoline Retailers’ (Anadegas) proposal to eliminate card payment terminals at fuel stations, warning that the measure could jeopardize the safety of drivers by forcing them to carry large amounts of cash.
Pérez Figuereo said returning to cash-only transactions would expose transport workers to a greater risk of robbery, recalling that many drivers were previously targeted by criminals while traveling to fuel stations. He argued that the country has made significant progress in improving security and should avoid measures that could reverse those gains.
The transportation leader called for dialogue among transport operators, fuel retailers, banks, and government authorities to reach a balanced solution that addresses merchants’ concerns over card processing fees—reported to range between 4% and 7%—while preserving electronic payment options. He pointed to Mexico as an example where negotiations helped reduce transaction costs through agreements with financial institutions, allowing card payments to remain in place.
The country that wants to decline and never progress. Incredible how evil and greedy these people are; an attempt not to pay taxes. Imagine making millions of dollars on Dominican soil and not wanting to pay ANY taxes to the government. They are probably not Dominican either, just foreigners with local interests where money is everything and to hell with the people.
part of the problem is that the Dominican officials have them train from the inception, to avoid paying taxes as a way to get them to do business here…not caring that they are hurting the country,
you don’t have to pay the government taxes (for the people) you just to pay them or make a hefty contribution
Gee, I wonder if they allowed alternative payment systems at local banks (paypal zelle etc) there would be greater competition in the market instead of worrying about not being able to tax it….
Eliminating card payments is absolutely absurd. People do not want to carry cash around when a card with do. The great thing about cards is they create a history of transactions. Cards, if part of personal card agreement will provide settlement for disputed transactions. Cash is a risk and liability.
From my interpretation of this article, it has nothing whatsoever to do with TAX! The issue is the charges banks, or credit card companies, levy on card payments amounting to between 4% and 7%. These are not taxes but a direct cost to the seller, reducing the income they receive. As I understand the situation, profitability from the sale of fuel is limited, the cost of these fees makes the transaction unprofitable, hence the proposal for cash payments. As recommended, a negotiation to reduce fees is the most sensible way forward.
