Santo Domingo, D.R., Sunday, August 23, 2026. – The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported that this Sunday temporary rains are expected during the morning and isolated downpours with thunderstorms and possible gusts of wind in the afternoon, due to the approach of a tropical wave and the incidence of a trough at height.
During the morning hours, the agency indicated that there will be weak to moderate rains in the towns of Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte, Sánchez Ramírez, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, La Altagracia and Greater Santo Domingo, among other areas.
For the afternoon, he indicated that isolated downpours with thunderstorms and possible gusts of wind are expected in the provinces of Monte Plata, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, Elías Piña and the northern part of San Juan.
On the other hand, the institution explained that the national territory will continue to be under the influence of a thin layer of Saharan dust, a condition that will favor a grayish, opaque sky.
Hot temperatures
The entity warned that temperatures will remain high, with a high thermal sensation, and recommended drinking water frequently, wearing light, loose, light-colored clothing, and avoiding direct exposure to solar radiation without proper protection.
Indomet also recalled that children, pregnant women, and the elderly are more susceptible to the effects of high temperatures.
Cyclone watch
Indomet reported that, at the beginning of next week, a tropical wave will leave the coasts of Africa and subsequently form a low-pressure area, with a 50% probability of reaching tropical cyclone status during the next seven days. Because of its position, it is considered important to follow up on its evolution.
It also reported two areas of heavy rain and disorganized thunderstorms with low potential to become a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours. The first is located northeast of the Azores Islands, with a 10% probability, while the second is located east of Bermuda, with a 20% probability. These phenomena do not represent a danger to the Dominican Republic.
Indomet urged the population to remain attentive to official weather information through its www.indomet.gob.do web portal and its social networks @indometrd.
