Tsunami alert lifted for Dominican Republic’s southern coast
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Authorities have lifted the tsunami alert that had been issued for the southern coast of the Dominican Republic following a powerful earthquake off the coast of Venezuela earlier on Wednesday.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) announced that the threat of a tsunami had passed after monitoring sea conditions and receiving updated information from meteorological and geological agencies.
Residents who had been advised to move away from coastal areas may now return to their normal activities. However, authorities urged the public to continue following official channels for any updates and to remain vigilant in the event of changing conditions.
The alert was issued after two magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck west of Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, prompting precautionary measures along parts of the Dominican Republic’s southern coastline.
