Two seismic events reported near Punta Cana within hours

Two earthquakes were recorded near Punta Cana early this Saturday, August 22, with magnitudes of 3.7 and 3.2, according to preliminary seismic data.

The first tremor, with a magnitude of 3.7, occurred around 1:50 a.m., with its epicenter approximately 84 kilometers northeast of Punta Cana and at a depth of about 71 kilometers.

A second earthquake, measured at magnitude 3.2, was recorded around 2:22 a.m., approximately 93 kilometers east of Punta Cana, at a depth of about 17 kilometers.

No reports of damage or injuries were associated with either event.

The Dominican Republic is located in a seismically active region due to the interaction between the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates, making earthquakes relatively frequent across the country and surrounding waters.
